50 The Light Brigade's two-day course is perfect for those who have responsibility for initiating, managing or promoting FTTH projects. It's also a quick pathway to preparation for the FTTH Council's certifcation test. Passing the Certifed Fiber to the Home Professional (CFHP) test, frst ofered in 2010 by the FTTH Council, is one way to raise a manager's status within any organization involved with fber-borne broadband. The council's goal is to enhance job skills for those making the jump from legacy technologies to FTTH. A broader view of the industry is also necessary for those who aspire to higher management in even the most technical companies. Courses Tailored to Students' Needs "The two-day course is meant for both groups of students," says Larry Johnson of The Light Brigade. "The manual covers an enormous amount of technical ground and also explains the history of fber optics in communications, starting with Charles Kao's seminal 1965 paper." That does not mean that every detail in the 2-inch-thick course manual is covered every time the course is given. "I concentrate on what is most important for the particular students taking that course session," Johnson said. Those who have taken Light Brigade courses know that instructors use PowerPoint slides that are directly keyed to specifc pages in the manual. Students see a page number in the upper-right- hand corner of each slide and typically add their own notes directly on the manual's pages. The CFHP course, 16 classroom hours over two days , provides MDU owners, operators and managers, as well as service-provider managers, the technical knowledge required to oversee design, implementation and maintenance of all fber-to-the-home network architectures and technologies. Cost management is emphasized as well, with the ofcial syllabus enriched by Johnson's own anecdotes. Taking the Certifed Fiber to the Home Professional Test?
