First, many critical factors are in- volved – and the optimal balance varies from community to community. 1 Bandwidth. No surprises here but plenty of evidence that bandwidth demands continue to escalate rapidly, particularly in such key verticals as student housing. Over-the-top video is still the biggest driver. 2 Quality of experience. When they're unhappy, MDU residents complain loudly and publicly. Te loudest com- plaints are inspired by poor service quality. Even if bandwidth is high on average, Internet service that slows down or disappears at crucial mo- ments generates howls of outrage. 3 Wireless coverage. A third of Ameri- cans have given up landlines for eco- nomics or convenience. In MDUs, the percentage is probably higher; many 20-somethings have never subscribed to landline service. Cellular and Wi- Fi coverage are both vitally necessary in MDUs. Property owners and resi- dents, especially in upscale buildings, are concerned about appearances. Visible equipment and wires, or even unattractively covered equipment and wires, detract from property values. 6 Cost. Again, no surprises: Property owners and residents alike want the most bang for the buck. 8 | BROADBAND COMMUNITIES | www.broadbandcommunities.com | OCTOBER 2012 builders? Clearly, What does all this mean for network robust infrastructure is more important today than ever be- fore. As Andrew Marshall of Campus Technologies points out, gigabit-capable networks should be installed in all new student housing communities. Infrastructure quality is only the be- ginning, however. Equally important is maximizing resident satisfaction with whatever infrastructure is there. • Because unicasting popular content via the Internet is inherently costly and inefficient, Pavlov Media intro- duced a content-delivery solution to deliver this programming more effi- ciently. Campus Technologies is test- ing solutions to the same problem. • Te Mesh Networks enables band- width management that provides the best quality of experience for the most users on a given network. • 3M and Clearfield show how to re- duce network installation cost and disruption and improve aesthetics. • To maximize user convenience and control, Campus Technologies is eliminating restrictions on the num- ber of Internet-enabled user devices and removing the requirement to au- thenticate these devices. For more ideas, see the MDU Tech- nology section. And don't forget to send nominations for next year's Top 100 MDU Technology Providers list. Multifamily property owners must strike a delicate balance to provide broadband services to residents. Bandwidth is the beginning – but not the end. Bandwidth Is Only Table Stakes masha@bbcmag.com.
